Planting an Edible Container Garden

August 18th, 2010

Sign up for a newsletter and get a free herb. www.mcshanesnursery.com Steve McShane here, McShane’s Nursery and Landscape Supply. Here to introduce you to the wonderful world of container gardening. Look at this wine barrel planter, fabulous way to get your own veggies into the kitchen. Some mizzuna, some red mustard, there’s even some chard in here! I see chives, onions and notice the flowers, beautiful. Easier to produce and put together than you could imagine. First, start with the stuff that you like to put in your dishes. If you like to use a lot of parsley, put it in there. Maybe broccoli, cauliflower.. In my case, I’m a huge fan of fresh beets, I love beets! I also love arugula, there’s nothing like an arugula salad and heck it works in soups and on pizzas. And I also use a lot of chives, so that’s what’s going to go into my garden. First step is with this wine barrel here; include a little bit of gravel on the bottom, 1 to 2 inches, a high quality potting soil too. Be sure to read the label! You want things like feather meal, kelp meal, bat guano.. This is good stuff for inside your garden. Once it’s in there, you’re ready to Rock and Roll. You get planting by mixing in a diversity of plants. Break up the roots a little bit, plant to the same depth as where the plant might have been inside the 6 pack. Get a few of those guys in there, make it look pretty. It doesn’t have to be perfect because this is your home farm! Some flowers, it’s already looking wonderful! We

MARCH 2007 Rydal Community Vegetable Garden

August 4th, 2010

Rydal Community Vegetable Garden is a small, voluntary scheme set up in the original walled garden of Rydal Hall, in the English Lake District. The garden had been disused and overgrown for many years. In 2005 work began to clear it, landscape it, and return the garden to productivity. The idea has been to create a working vegetable garden, which is maintained by volunteers, who in return benefit from sharing ideas and harvesting seasonal, local, organic produce. This has created an additional feature amongst Rydal Hall’s own, recently restored gardens, which can be visited by all as a place to see, learn and relax. The Vegetable Garden has a small Visitors Centre, accessible paths and information signs. It is organised into roughly defined areas. These include a large, traditional Greenhouse and a Poly-tunnel, which are used to establish younger plants and also house warmth loving species including Vines, Figs and Tomatoes. There is an Orchard with many lesser-known varieties of tree, which is also where the Chickens and Bee Hives are found. There is a Sensory Garden at the top end of the hill, which is planted with Herbs and has seating and views across the whole garden and out to the hills beyond. And the rest of the garden is a terraced mixture of Fruit, Vegetables and Flowers, including Strawberries, Pears, Beans, Courgettes, Potatoes, Lettuce and many, many more. These films are a monthly journey through both the progress made and the changes seen in the garden, the

My 2008 Container Garden (Seedlings) PART 1

August 3rd, 2010

I will be starting a vegetable container garden this year. I’ll be transplanting these seedlings to Earthboxes, half-barrels and various other containers when they’re ready. The seedlings that I’m starting are: grean beans, zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, tomatoes (hybrid and heirloom varieties) and peppers (bell, sweet banana, jalapeno). In the video I called the lettuce seedlings “salad” but ya know what I mean. Also shows how my Aerogarden herbs are doing after being in soil for 2 days.
