Herbal And Organic Gardening: Useful Tips For Beginners

May 6th, 2010

Setting out to work on an organic veggie and herb garden is quite an enterprise, but can be one of the most satisfying ways to go green that there is. The definition of organic is grown without the use of pesticides or other chemicals, but naturally.

Organically grown vegetables and herbs are safer, healthier and also taste better than those grown with the help of chemical products, plus you can save get for free what would cost you at the grocer’s.

Unless you have no space to spare at all, one of the first steps to an organic garden is to set up a composting box, which will allow you to fertilize your herbs and vegetables, while also getting rid of kitchen waste. Even if you live in a flat you can compost, as it’s an odorless procedure if done right.

Your home-made compost will also fulfill a secondary purpose: it will help your organic garden to retain moisture, and as a result you will need to water your edible plants less often. Put all your kitchen waste and also any garden cuttings you may have onto the compost heap, but avoid great quantity of fish and meat remains.

The second step will be to get organic seeds so that you can start to grow vegetable and herbs in your organic garden. Don’t take any seeds, the vast majority are industrially and not organically grown.

There probably are specialized shops that sell organic seeds for gardening in your area, but you can also buy them through an online shop and have them mailed to you. Online is probably better for most users, as you get the convenience of choosing from home from a bigger catalogue, and as for all mailed products you can return organic gardening supplies if they are not up to your expectation.

To begin seeding, don’t start your organic garden outdoors right away! Use a glasshouse or put your seeds inside the house, where it’s warm. Let them sprout on a piece of damp cotton or paper and then transfer them to small pots and let them grow a bit.

Once the first leaves are showing, put them into individual pots as a preparation to outdoor planting in your organic garden. There are some fine composting pots that you can use, plant them in the ground together with your seedling and let them act as extra natural fertilizer for your organic garden.

Now that you have compost and grown seedlings, you will also need good organic soil. This earth is much better as it acts as a natural pest controller, and will let your plants grow more vigorous. If you had a on-organic garden or flower bed where your organic garden is going to be planted, we recommend removing and substituting a layer of old soil altogether.

Once you have some good compost, spread it over your soil. The layer should be about two inches thick. If done correctly, the compost alone will contribute all the necessary nutrients and minerals that your organic vegetable and herbal garden needs to grow and flourish.

Basil Herbs, The Undisputed Kings of The Kitchen

November 26th, 2009

Basil herbs is actually derived from a Greek word which means “King” (or basileus). Some origins of the word suggest that ancient Greeks and Romans associated the word and thus the herb as something malicious. Some myths concluded that one must yell and curse before any herb plants would grow from the seeds. While that was proven to be untrue, it’s hard to deny that basil herbs are still a rather pungent spice, if not particularly angry.

In later times, basil came to represent love, and men in Italy would give women a sprig of basil as a romantic gesture. When it comes to cuisine, basil is usually identified with Mediterranean food, along with Italian and Thai specialties. However, did you know that this herb actually came from India? Yes, it was Vishnu and Krishna’s own personal choice.

Growing Basil Plants

Basil herb plants grow as perennials in some tropical regions and are often used as annuals in temperate zones. The first and most important thing to understand about basil herbs is that the plant is very sensitive to temperature. It is best grown in warm and sunny weather. In fact, it’s more preferable to keep pots or gardens indoors rather than expose it to outdoor weather.

Basil needs a top quylaity soil that won’t clog along with best compost or manure that’s been around for a while. A steady flow of water and good drainage are mandatory requirements. Lack of natural light as well as positioning the plant in a drought will cause it to droop. It also requires mulching to keep the soil up to the job and the stems & flowers need to be removed when the plant starts to kick along.

Removing the flowers is something that has to happen, that’s what gives basil to the world. If yiou get the opportunity, try the flavor of basil leaves just before the plant flowers.

Basil & It’s Uses

Although basil herbs do posses antviral & antibacterial benefits they’re not generally used as a homeopathic extract, they are best known for their benefits to cooking. Part of the mint family they do actually aid digestive processes as well as brewing a pot of tea.

Many say there are lots on varietis of basil yet to be revealed although there currently is over sixty varieties. The most popular of the family is sweet basil although certain soups & beverages contain lemon basil. Other members of the group include Opal herbs & cinnamon.

Growing your own basil herbs gives you a rare opportunity: you can use it as seasoning when the herbs are extra fresh and straight off the leaves of the plant. Basil you find at the common store has been sitting in a container for days or even weeks and is not anywhere near the same quality.

The dishes you serve up to your family will have that ‘X’ factor if you use fresh basil!

Weber Grills And The Outdoor Cooking Revolution

February 4th, 2009

Weber Grills are at the center of the outdoor grilling revolution that happened when World War II ended. George Stephen Sr., at the time was residing in Mount Prospect, IL., was irritated over combating the elements when trying to do grilling at his home in an open brazier fashion.

Solving this problem became a mission for home and the rest is history….

His first solution was quite easily accomplished due to the fact that he was employed by Weber Brothers Metal Works, which was a metal fabricating company. He made a round hood by cutting a buoy into halves that was made of metal, and viola he actually invented his first version of the kettle grill.

After that was done, all it took was some marketing for this different type of grill, which quickly became popular. It was so popular that the company’s name became the Weber-Stephens Products Company. Then in just a matter of years, George Stephens bought the company to become the only owner.

Keeping the wind and rain from ruining a good steak or burger was now a thing of the past for grillers across America. To top it off, there was a new moistness and smokiness to the food that wasn’t there before. While other grills in the 1950’s were selling for upwards of $7, most consumers were so excited to have this new grill that they were paying $50 for kettle grill. It had quickly become something of a status symbol, just as the large stainless steel grills are today.

Initially the Weber Kettle Grill was available in the Midwest. But that soon changed when retailers started selling it all across the country. The covered grill was quickly becoming a part of the American culture.

Which Weber Grill Works For You?

Beginning grillers don’t need to sacrifice quality just because they aren’t ready for a high-end grill. Weber is know for the quality of their products at all price ranges and it becomes obvious when compared the products of their competitors.

The Weber Spirit E 310 Grill: There have been a few times in the past where I’ve saved a few bucks now, only to find out the grill wasn’t going to last. Something always falls apart, or the starter mechanism stops working. It seems like a good deal at the time, but most folks don’t think about the cost of replacing the grill every few years.

If you look for a grill that might cost a bit more, but lasts years longer, wouldn’t that be a great deal? Spending a little bit more now will save you many dollars down the road. The E-310 is a perfect example of a low cost grill that is in the high quality family. You need to check this out if even if you have a large family to feed, but need to do it on a budget. Weber’s lower end products compare in quality to their competitors higher end lines. But don’t take my word for it, look for reviews of Weber grills from consumers just like you. You’ll also gain more insight into the daily wear and tear you’ll see in different parts of the country.

Weber Genesis number E310 Gas Grill: Are you needing a more improved grill? The Genesis line winds up being a good mid level grill compared to the low end Spirit and the higher end Summit grills go.

Again you’re purchasing a grill may last as long as 10 years, so don’t be dismayed about the little bit higher cost over the competitors. You don’t have to take my word for this. The Weber grill reviews we have from consumers on Weber grills is actually where you need to focus since those people have spent the money and bought the products from Weber. You can make an educated decision by reading their experiences.

The Weber Summit S-450 Natural Gas Grill: If you’re worried about being top (Hot) dog on the block, the Summit line is the one you want to buy. The 6 burner S-650 or the 4 burner S-450 are the best of the best in the Weber product family. Unlike other makes, parts are easy to find for Weber grills, so if you ever do have a problem, it’s no problem.

Once you get into this price range, it’s definitely worth looking at the competition. They could very well be offering the latest gizmo. And since they are all made of high quality materials, you don’t hav to worry so much about that part. Competition really sparks some inventive ideas in the high end grills.

Buying a Weber Grill

Complaints about Weber grills are hard to find. The products are very high quality and even if there is a problem, the company prides itself on taking care of it. Taken as a whole, this originator of the modern grill delivers the best bang for the buck in grills.

Weber sells their products through a number of outlets. You can find them online and in your local hardware store. I prefer shopping online because I can do research and find the best price all at the same time. If you like to touch what you buy, maybe you’d prefer your local Home Depot.
