Growing Herbs Indoors

February 4th, 2009

Every budding chef likes a good supply of fresh herbs.

A small plastic window box can give you a surprising variety on a sunny windowsill. Firstly, select the warmest, sunniest windowsill you have available. Then get a long narrow window box pot and fill with compost. Then select your herbs. Slow growing woody varieties are best left for outdoor growing. Look for leafy varieties that you will use a lot of.

My favorites to grow indoors are basil and chives. Sprinkle seeds onto the top of your compost and water well. Keep moist, but don’t over water. If you over water, you will grow more mold than herbs. As you use up some of your plants, plant a few more seeds. keep the pots full with either ready to use or growing plants, then you will not have to wait for a new batch to grow. If you have too many, chop up your oversupply and freeze with a little water in ice cube trays.

A way in which you can cheat is to look out for supermarket pots of growing herbs past their sell by date and being sold off cheaply. Separate the growing plants to give them more space and you will greatly increase their longevity and your yield.
